Highlight of the Year : 2019

At the top of every year, I like to reflect on a highlight from the past twelve months.

In October, I had the opportunity to make a presentation about the importance of social media marketing to members of the Newfoundland & Labrador Federation of Co-Operatives during their AGM.

It was an enriching experience, and it went really well, but what makes it such a bright spot in 2019 stretches beyond the presentation itself. I had the pleasure of working with a good friend, Brandon Hillier, to prepare the presentation and that was one of the perks of the process. Brandon and I are both creative problem solvers, critical thinkers, and good public speakers who play off each other really well. Talking, brainstorming, practicing, joking, and otherwise preparing for the presentation was a fun undertaking in and of itself.

This experience also gave us the opportunity to take a road trip back to the west coast of Newfoundland where we got to see our families and reconnect with old friends over a liquid repast.

As an aside, as Brandon was preparing to leave for the trip, his fiancée asked how long the drive was. He said that it would be about eight hours, to which she replied, “Just enough time for you and Matt to have two or three good conversations.”

Another layer to this is that it affirmed my choice of career. The fact that I was asked to do this presentation and that it went really well made me more confident in my choice to pursue & my abilities in online marketing.

Admittedly, I started off the presentation a little bit nervously. Facing 50 esteemed business owners in a banquet hall can be a little intimidating. However, as we progressed, I got a lot more comfortable and a natural flow developed as Brandon & I handed topics off to one another and built on each other’s points. As we talked more about quality content & best practices, I could feel my enthusiasm rising and I had to remind myself to rein it in.

The hour-long talk was followed by some Q&A, for which the audience had some good questions, which I’ll take as an indication that they were well engaged. If you’re interested, you can see the slides from our presentation here.

I’m looking forward to taking part in similar activities and in creating more memories with friends in 2020.

What was your highlight from 2019?
